The Maker
My name is Rory Pozzolo, known to many as Mr. Fabulous. The name Mr Fabulous was gifted to me by a friend of mine, who worked at a cafe and felt it was fitting. I fell in love with it and I have used it ever since.
I am a nonbinary fabric artist and creative soul, currently living in the traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh people, in British Columbia Canada. I love bringing beauty to the world in any form I can and fell in love with the notion of creating my own clothign, sometime in highschool. I've always prioritized individuality and expression with a focus on the process of creation and how best to reduce waste, but only recently have I really honed those practices. In late 2016 I took the leap of furthering my knowledge in my craft, and attended Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion Design and Haute Couture Sewing, based in Byward Market in Ottawa.
Attending Richard Robinson academy launched me into my future. I found myself in a bigger city than I had been accustomed to, with such a vibrant culture to pull inspiration from. My fellow students and I created works of art together and helped to foster our creativity together and allowed us to express our unique styles and test new aesthetics without fear of judgement. The training which I received in this supportive and vibrant place has provided me with the tools and principles that have carried me through my career so far. Our training focused primarily on the traditional methods of creation in our field. We learned to create using traditional practices rather than the expedited methods used in modern manufacturing. I found that when hand stitching, I was at peace and felt calm, and when it took up to three months to complete the haute couture finishes for garments, I felt immense pride and satisfaction when regarding my finished product. For the designs I make now, I implement a mixture of Haute Couture, and modern commercial finishing to allow me to create pieces in a slightly reduced timeframe.
I seek to bring vibrancy and fun into the world at the same time as inspiring folks to express authentically. Raising awareness about the practices in place in the fashion industry, specifically in fast fashion is important to me. Generally, I enjoy incorporating colour, print, and texture into a piece to bring depth and a more interesting experience for the wearer. Each garment is made as a one of a kind piece, and is constructed entirely from reclaimed material to be mindful of its impact.
Together, we can work towards a future that is sustainable and ecologically responsible - and also allows us the freedom to express authentically and feel fabulous.
